Ever wondered how to get started as a hypnotherapist? Jessica Crowley is about to tell you how it’s done. She says …
My advice to anyone deciding on what they want to “do with their life” is – make your passion your profession.
From taking your GCSE options to choosing A levels, vocational courses or an apprenticeship, to University or launching straight into employment or business opportunities – listen to your gut and pursue those subjects that light you up as your passion will motivate you to succeed and live a life of your own design.
As for me, I eventually acknowledged my vocation in my forties. The signs were all there but I was too concerned with how I was going to pass exams and earn a living to see them. So, I dabbled in business studies (skills that have been very useful of course), I had jobs that helped others (customer service) and which were creative (marketing) but I ignored the signs that helping people to change their lives was what I really wanted to do.
Until in, June 2014, I learned how NLP coaching and hypnotherapy changes lives. I was working for a Royal Marines charity at the time and met a lot of veterans who had been traumatized by their experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq. I witnessed their lives, and that of their family, change over the next couple of years and was inspired by the significant benefits this kind of coaching had had on their lives. That’s when I started training in the field of change work.
Now, as a solution focused coach and motivational Hypnotherapist, I have helped 100s of clients, aged 5 to 75, to change their lives using a set of mind coaching techniques including Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Kinetic Shift.
If this a field you would like to train in, I would recommend researching a range of pathways for learning.
Dip your toe in
You can watch 100s of Hypnotherapists in action on You Tube – Hypnotists I have been inspired by are Melissa Tiers, Joanna Cameron, Beryl Comar, Anthony Jacquin, James Tripp and Adam Eason and in the coaching and NLP field, founder Richard Bandler and also Anthony Robbins.
If you are curious and want to learn more, you can attend a short course, there are many 5, 7 & 10 day NLP and Hypnotherapy courses out there.
Making it a career
However, if you are seriously considering a career I would find a more substantial course, usually around 10 months that will include seminars and home study. Home study is fantastic as this is when you get to practice with your family and friends and really hone your skill as a hypnotherapist or NLP practitioner so that by the time you have completed your course, you are confident in your ability and prepared to set up your practice.
Find the right course for you
We all have different learning styles and trainers also have their individual approached. Take the time to find a course for you.
Tapping “Hypnotherapy course” into Google will flag up hundreds of course providers, and the one on top is usually the one who has paid the most to advertise – which doesn’t really mean they are the best.
Read what they are about, what their delivery style is – for one person hearing about all the history and theory of the subject might feel exciting, where another person might want to dive in to the practical.
Once you have selected a few training providers, read about what their students are saying through website testimonials and on social media. If you can’t find what you are looking for, ask the learning provider to send you testimonials or put you in touch with students who you can ask directly.
This is a sure way of understanding the student’s experience and if the course is going to give you what you are looking for.
You will be investing a lot of money, so it is worth the initial effort.
Hypnotherapy and NLP are not magic, but they can be magical.
Ultimately, in life, we want to be happy – right? When a person’s life takes them off that path to happiness and they lose their way through circumstances or a perspective of the world that is not serving them well, then as a trained coach and hypnotist, you will have a toolbox of techniques that you can share with them.
With these tools your clients can lead themselves onto new pathways and using the creative resources of their imagination they can create new possibilities with their life.
And, the reward for witnessing that transformation is magic.
